THE FUTURE WE FIGHT FOR

Welcome to Live Well PDX

Exploring the connection between exhaustion, dignity, and houselessness in Portland and beyond.
Every person deserves dignity. Our project examines the everyday challenges which take away dignity from those experiencing houselessness. To holistically help, we need to start with the most basic necessities: hygiene, food, sleep, and healthcare.
Through research, stories, and community input, we aim to shed light on often-overlooked barriers. We will also highlight how Portland and other cities can do better.

🔍 What We’re  Exploring

Too often, efforts to "solve houselessness" skip the essential steps people need to survive and regain stability. Our research highlights a clear hierarchy of needs that must be addressed before housing alone can succeed:
•Access to
basic hygiene
•Consistent access to food
•Safe
places to rest and sleep
•
Healthcare (including mental health and addiction services)
•
Sustainable housing

As our researchers stated: "Housing is important, but when someone hasn’t had a stable home in a long time, keeping up with chores, cooking, and appointments can be overwhelming. We need to meet people where they are first."

🧼 Hygiene, Food & Survival First
These needs are not “extras.” They are human rights. Without access to clean clothes, restrooms, showers, or warm meals, the daily struggle becomes both exhausting and dehumanizing.

🩺 Healthcare Access
From chronic illnesses to mental health and addiction services, many unhoused people are caught in cycles of untreated conditions. Without access to care, recovery, and more it becomes even more difficult.

🏠 What About Housing?
We believe housing is vital, but not the first step for everyone.
Before asking someone to maintain a home, we must ensure they have: A way to stay clean

•A place to sleep
•Food to eat
•Health support

When those basic needs are met, housing becomes more sustainable and people are more likely to succeed.
